19 Section 2 How BAPC uses Learning Organization ideas for process improvement

20 What is PQI? PQI is our organization-wide Process and Quality Improvement (PQI) Program. It’s purpose is to advance efficient, effective service delivery and achievement of strategic and program goals. Section 2: How BAPC uses Learning Organization ideas for process improvement

21 Quality at BAPC How do we organize ourselves to ensure quality services for parents and children? We gather outcome and satisfaction data from those we serve We analyze that data and plan for process improvement How do we assure that our services are of a quality that meets the needs of parents and children? By applying Learning Organization Theory and Tools Through the use of strategic and ongoing planning By reviewing and improving the systems and structures of the organization Section 2: How BAPC uses Learning Organization ideas for process improvement

22 What is our formal structure for PQI?
While the process improvement activities for BAPC are the ultimate responsibility of the Agency Management Teams and Quality Improvement Team, the Learning Organization theory and tools makes every staff person responsible for improving our processes for delivering quality services to parents and children. Uh, that means YOU! Section 2: How BAPC uses Learning Organization ideas for process improvement

30 Section 3 Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

31 The Five Disciplines of a Learning Organization
We listed these five disciplines earlier. Personal Mastery Mental Models Systems Thinking Team Learning Shared Vision To learn more click on this link: Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

32 Example 1: Kolb’s Cycle of Learning
One example of systems thinking is using Kolb’s Cycle of Learning tool. This tool is considered part of the Systems Thinking Discipline. The Cycle of Learning tool helps us think systemically to improve our business processes. This tool is used to review the success of a process. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

33 How Kolb’s Cycle of Learning works:
Kolb suggested that there are four steps we can use to maximize learning after any event. Using these steps will help understand what happened, what went well and what we may do differently in the future. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

34 How Kolb’s Cycle of Learning works:
Click on the light bulb to learn what happens at each step. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

35 How Kolb’s Cycle of Learning works:
First, you do something. A project, task or activity. For example, you could sponsor a parenting conference. Click on the light bulb to learn what happens at each step. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

36 How Kolb’s Cycle of Learning works:
Concrete Action (Do something) After the activity, sit with the team, reflect and review what happened. Click on the light bulb to learn what happens at each step. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

37 Reflective Observation
How Kolb’s Cycle of Learning works: Concrete Action (Do something) Click on the light bulb to learn what happens at each step. Reflective Observation Talk about why it happened the way it did. Dig deep. Ask why 5 times. Make hypothesis about cause and effect. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

38 Reflective Observation
How Kolb’s Cycle of Learning works: Concrete Action (Do something) Come up with a plan about what to do the next time. Get ready to do it again. Click on the light bulb to learn what happens at each step. Reflective Observation Draw Conclusions Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

39 Reflective Observation
How Kolb’s Cycle of Learning works: Concrete Action (Do something) These steps may seem simple, but most of the time we don’t take the time to use them. Following this simple cycle can make a significant difference in our learning and process improvement. Reflective Observation Create a plan Draw Conclusions Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

40 Example 1: Kolb’s Cycle of Learning
The Cycle of Learning tools could be used to review any of a variety of processes. Examples of how the tool has been used include: How could we improve the All Staff Retreat next year? What process improvements could be made for our FLOK conference? What would help our HR systems work more effectively? The following example demonstrates how this tool helps us with our internal clinical auditing system. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

41 Reflective Observation
Concrete Action (Do Something) Reflective Observation (Notice & Identify) Plan to do something different Cycle of Learning (Kolb) Draw Conclusions Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

42 Example 2: Creating a shared vision
A second example of how a Learning Organization tool can be helpful for process improvement is in the discipline of Shared Vision. Creation of a shared vision for BAPC included much dialogue and discussion among many BAPC stakeholders. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

43 Shared Vision A Shared Vision is a collectively desired future to which each member feels a personal connection. When Beech Acres Parenting Center wanted to improve the way we served children and families, we created a new Shared Vision. Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC

44 Intentional Parenting ©
Vision for self as a parent How do you want your children to speak of you when you are gone? What kind of parent do you aspire to be? Vision for child as an adult What values and character qualities do you want your child to show when she/he is 25 years old? What kind of person do you hope she/he becomes? Fully present in the moment Mindful parenting. How do you consciously use ‘teachable moments’ each day as opportunities to be your vision as a parent; and to teach, model, and/or coach your child in the values included in your vision of them? Strength-based Identifying, accepting, valuing, and nurturing, a child’s core talents and temperament as a person. Identifying, accepting, valuing, and developing your own core talents and temperament as a person. Identifying, accepting, valuing, and connecting with others’ talents as resources (includes informal and formal supports) to inform, guide and support you and your child.

45 Review Section 3 Review Using Kolb’s learning cycle tool and creating shared vision are two examples of how BAPC uses Learning Organization tools for process improvement. True False Section 3: Examples of the Learning Organization tools used to ensure quality at BAPC
