2 Random Fact Large intestine, over the entire lifetime of a person, actually ends up processing around 50 tons of food consumed by an individual. It may be more or less depending on how much a person eats

3 The Large Intestine Includes the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal
Larger in diameter, but shorter than small intestine Absorbs water, salts and vitamins Stores indigestible material until elimination

4 The Cecum Peritonitis – infection of the lining of the abdominal cavity

5 The Colon Ascending, Transverse, Descending, & Sigmoid
Ridding the body of undigested material = maintenance of homeostasis Bacteria break down indigestible material and produce vitamins and molecules

6 Polyps Growths in the epithelial lining

7 Diarrhea & Constipation
Major causes are infection of the lower intestinal tract and nervous stimulation i.e. food poisoning
