Working Together to Prevent Suicide Facts and Figures

2 Over 800,000 people die by suicide annually, representing 1 person every 40 seconds

3 The global suicide rate is 11.4 per 100,000 people
Suicide is the 15th leading cause of death globally, accounting for 1.4% of all deaths The global suicide rate is 11.4 per 100,000 people 15.0/100,000 for males /100,000 for females

4 Global suicide rates among people aged 15-24 are higher in males than females
Self-harm largely occurs among older adolescents, and globally is the 2nd leading cause of death for older adolescent girls

5 Some common risk factors associated with suicide include, but are not limited to:
genetics psychological, social, and cultural risk factors experiences of trauma and loss

6 Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in people who die by suicide
50% of individuals in high income countries who die by suicide have major depressive disorder at their time of death

7 For every 1 suicide, 25 people make a suicide attempt

8 135 people are affected by each suicide death
This equates to 108 million people bereaved by suicide worldwide every year

9 Relatives and close friends of people who die by suicide are a high-risk group for suicide, due to:
The psychological trauma of a suicide loss Potential shared familial and environmental risk Suicide contagion through the process of social modelling, and The burden of stigma associated with this loss

10 Take a minute, change a life
This World Suicide Prevention Day and everyday take a minute to reach out to someone - a complete stranger, close family member or friend - this can change a life

11 What you can do if someone show signs of suicide: ACT
ACKNOWLEDGE the fact that you are seeing signs of suicide in your friend and that it’s serious CARE enough to let your friend know that your want them to be safe and that you are concerned that s/he needs help that you are not able to provide TELL a responsible adult, either with your friend or by yourself on h/her behalf.
