1 Today’s Questions Parallels are lines of . They are measured or of the
Meridians are lines of They are measured or Why do we use latitude & longitude?

2 Latitude and L o n g I t u d e
Hula hoops, parallels, and meridians

3 I. Latitude (parallels)
Goes east and west on the globe Shows the distance up to 90° north or south of the Equator

4 I. Latitude (parallels)
Imagine parallels are great big hula hoops of different sizes stacked horizontally around the earth with equal space in between

5 II. Longitude (meridians)
Known as meridians Goes north and south on the globe Measured up to 180° east or west of the Prime Meridian Get closer together as the reach the poles

6 II. Longitude (meridians)
The closer meridians get to the poles, the closer they are to each other

7 III. Why? ABSOLUTE LOCATION !!

8 Using Latitude and Longitude
Location Degrees of latitude (Measured North or South from Equator) 2. Degrees of longitude (Measured East or West from Prime Meridian) Phoenix is 33° N, 112° W Practice cities and countries (A4 and A5 in your text)

9 45° N, 76° W Ottawa, Canada

10 34° S, 151° E Sydney, Australia

11 33° S, 70° W Santiago, Chile

12 40° N, 118° E Beijing, China

13 4. Mark the location 45° N latitude, 82° W longitude with an X.
Label the three (3) states that extend below latitude 30° N on the map. 2. Label the US state that is mostly east of longitude 70° W on the map. 3. Label the three (3) US states that extend west of longitude 120° W on the map. 4. Mark the location 45° N latitude, 82° W longitude with an X. 5. Label the state that is located entirely between 40-45° N latitude and between ° W longitude on the map.

14 1. Tokyo, JAPAN 2. Seoul, SOUTH KOREA 3. Shanghai, CHINA 4. Osaka, JAPAN 5. Hong Kong, CHINA
