2 Sustainably sceptical
YOU MAY SAY WHY AM I SAYING SUSTAINABILITY IS SOMETHING FOR THE FUTURE….. Sustainability has over the years been embedded in our procurement vocabulary, but as with anything that becomes the norm its sense of urgency has become lost, buried in the raft of organisational policy documents and our need to fulfil our objective of in-year savings for our Trusts. Personally, this has until now made me sceptical of tangible benefits of sustainable procurement for the NHS. How many of us actually feel we can influence the effects on our environment through the myriad of contracts for goods and services we place - other than specifying suppliers must have a sustainable development policy? Even then do we actually monitor and measure its effects? If you can reflect back and remember with wonder and excitement of how you thought life would be like in the year 2000 and then in 1999 at …filled with the euphoria of a new year’s spirit, people all around the world were thinking…‘Will all the lights go out, will the computers stop working, will life ever be the same….?’ Or was that just me?! For our children and grandchildren the new year of 2100 could be a very different experience. Attending a course run by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership (CISL), leading academics demonstrated that if the current trend of increasing levels of CO2 emissions is not curtailed in the next 30 years, its damaging effects will be irreversible, with global warming causing havoc to the climate and having a major impact in reducing the resources available to sustain a growing population, making it clear that the time to review and re-energise our view of sustainable procurement is now Current trend of increasing levels of CO2 emissions is not curtailed in the next 30 years, its damaging effects will be irreversible, with global warming causing havoc to the climate and having a major impact in reducing the resources available to sustain a growing population, making it clear that the time to review and re-energise our view of sustainable procurement is now NHS NWPD is aiming to assist in developing guidance for trusts to recognise the value of the green £ and begin to take steps to make a practical contribution to the sustainability agenda. £ = ?
