American Revolution The Fighting… an overview

2 Early Stages- Phase 1 British forced from Boston, relocate in New York (amid numerous Loyalists) Continental Army lose decisively in Long Island and Washington Heights…retreat to New Jersey. Successful attack on Hessians at Trenton and British at Princeton (keeps the army alive). Valley Forge- winter encampment for Washington and the main army… British goal-cut off New England, begin to move from Canada (Burgoyne), merge with Howe, take Albany and control the river.

3 Phase 2 Burgoyne is stifled by geography and American army… (Howe never moves decisively) After a month, Burgoyne’s army, worn down from the march, encounter Americans at Saratoga (2 battles) and America wins! (Gates and Arnold are heroes) French become allies… viva la France!

4 Phase 3- The South Clinton replaces Howe… morale improves for Brits. Major campaign in the South (assuming the south was much more loyal than the North) By 1781 (6th year of war) Americans having more consistent success Barbaric fighting between Patriots and Loyalists (much more personal) Surprise victories for Patriots at Cowpens and Kings Mountain Yorktown has become the base for operations for British… accompanied by British Navy… a British command led by Gen. Cornwallis marches to Yorktown. French navy keeps the British Navy away… Washington and Lafayette’s French/American army close in on Yorktown… unable to retreat, and cut off from supplies, are forced to surrender… British public demands a negotiated peace, and negotiations begin in Paris…
