1
KEY CONCEPT Science is a way of thinking, questioning, and gathering evidence.
2
Like all science, biology is a process of inquiry. Scientists:
make observations form a hypothesis as a possible answer to a question. test their hypotheses (experiment) analyze their data. Evaluate their results / make a conclusion Repeat!
3
Experiments allow scientists to determine what causes a phenomenon.
4
EXPERIMENT: test ONE variable per experiment.
Min 3 test samples for accuracy Independent variables are manipulated (x axis) Dependent variables are observed and measured (y axis) Constants are conditions that are kept the same Control group only contains constants.
5
A theory explains a wide range of observations.
Theories explain a wide range of observations and experimental results. A theory is supported by a wide range of scientific evidence. Theories can change based on new evidence. New evidence shows that ulcers are caused by bacteria.
6
Data can be QUALITATIVE OR QUANTITATIVE
QUALITATIVE DATA: Involves a description or a quality: ex. Flower colors QUANTITATIVE DATA: Involves an amount: ex. No. of flower petals
