1 April 19th/20th Notes 12.b: Classification

2 TODAY’S TARGETS: I can explain the diversity of life in the ocean using target vocabulary.
VIDEO LINK: KEY VOCAB: Animal, kingdom, invertebrates, vertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, worms, euglena, amoeba, vascular, nonvascular All living organisms are currently divided into three domains: archaea, bacteria and eukaryote. Archaea can be found in environments of extreme temperature, salinity and pressure; these organisms are known as extremophiles. They dominate environments that are too stressful for most organisms. All six kingdoms of life are represented in the ocean. 12. Ocean Diversity

3 specific examples reviewed in class (see next slide)
TODAY’S TARGETS: I can classify life in the ocean based on lifestyle using target vocabulary. Plankton Nekton Benthos Definition Examples organisms that drift or swim weakly and are thus powerless to counteract currents active swimmers organisms that are attached to or move on or beneath the sea bottom phytoplankton and zooplankton fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals divided into epifauna and epiflora, and infauna Some organisms engage in the habits of more than one lifestyle. Some organisms lifestyle’s change with stage in life. Plankton are organisms that drift or swim weakly and are thus powerless to counteract currents. Plankton can be divided into phytoplankton and zooplankton. While the majority of plankton are microscopic in size, not all are. Nekton are active swimmers and include fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals. Benthos are organisms that are attached to or move on or beneath the sea bottom. Benthos are divided into epifauna and epiflora, and infauna. specific examples reviewed in class (see next slide) 12. Ocean Diversity
