1 Honor Goodsite’s Environmental Presentation

2 Meet Honor Goodsite! Name: Company: Job: Skills: Likes: Dislikes:
Goodsite Engineering Structural Engineer Excellent at problem solving, a maths and science whizz! Art, promoting careers in construction and protecting the environment. Untidy sites, litter, unfair treatment or bullying (Animation on this page: None)

3 What is the Environment?
The environment is the whole of the natural world – which aspects can you name? Animals Trees Mountains (Animation on this page: Answers for each picture fade in) Answers: Animals Trees Mountains Rivers Plants The air we breathe/Atmosphere Rivers Plants The Atmosphere

4 What are the issues our environment is facing?
Pollution Global Warming (Animation on this page: names of the issues will appear under their respective images.) The environment is facing many problems at the moment. Most of these are man-made. Can you name these issues? But don’t panic! Construction companies are doing all they can to protect the environment and we will go through what steps we are taking, later in this presentation! Deforestation

5 Can you think of any examples of pollution?
What is pollution? Can you think of any examples of pollution? What damage is it doing? (Animation on this page: Questions fade in) What is Pollution? Pollution is when something harmful gets into the environment when it should not be there. Can you think of three types of pollution? Air pollution Water pollution Soil pollution What examples do you have of these types of pollution? Air pollution example: gases and fumes coming from the cars we all drive, they pollute the air we breathe and damage the atmosphere. Buildings like factories and power stations also produce gases and fumes that pollute the air. Water pollution example: oil spilling into the ocean, human litter such as plastic bags, bottles and cans in our oceans, lakes and rivers. Soil pollution example: hazardous chemicals spilling into the ground destroying all the plant life. These chemicals can also stop us from growing crops if they’re spilled in the wrong place! What damage is it doing? Air pollution damage: Causes acid rain which damages buildings. Destroys the ozone layer meaning we are exposed to more UV rays causing a growth in skin cancer and cataracts cases. Polluted air also causes both humans and animals to have a number of breathing difficulties. Water pollution damage: Entire lakes and other bodies of water have been left uninhabitable by water pollution killing wildlife and ecosystems. Flooding is another example as waste and soil erosion builds up in rivers and streams. Soil pollution damage: hazardous chemicals spilling into the ground destroying all the plant life. These chemicals can also stop us from growing crops if they’re spilled in the wrong place!

6 Global Warming What is global warming?
Do you know what is causing global warming? What is a carbon footprint? What effect is global warming having on our environment? (Animation on this page: Questions fade in) What is Global Warming? Global warming is the steady rise in temperature of the earth’s surface and atmosphere. Do you know what is causing Global Warming? Global warming is caused by the “greenhouse effect”. This is when certain gases (primarily carbon dioxide) are let out into the atmosphere which trap the heat our planet is producing. What is a carbon footprint? Our carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities an individual undertakes. Every time we get into a car, a bus or an aeroplane we are adding to the carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere and in turn, our carbon footprint. What effect is Global Warming having on our environment? It is changing long-term weather patterns - summers are hotter and longer and winters are colder and shorter. Increasing temperatures are making the weather more extreme – we are getting more storms and hurricanes. Global warming is drying up entire water sources like rivers and lakes. It is also melting the ice caps in the polar regions making it difficult for animals like polar bears to survive. Scientists have predicted that the sea level will rise by 1-4 feet by 2050 because of the melting ice!

7 What do you use trees for?
Deforestation What is deforestation? Why is it an issue? What do you use trees for? (Animation on this page: Questions fade in) What is deforestation? Deforestation is where large areas of trees are cut down and used for non-forest use like building houses or shops, or clearing space for new roads. Why is it an issue? Each year millions of trees are cut down. We need trees to reduce global warming as they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Deforestation causes animal and plant habitats to be destroyed. What do we use trees for? We use trees for all sorts of furniture – sofas, cabinets, tables, chairs etc. We also use trees for paper and wrappers. Sap – the thick oil-type liquid that comes from trees is used to make syrup, crayons, paint and soap. Roots of some trees are used to make medicine. Trees produce oxygen from the carbon dioxide that we breathe out.

8 Why do we use these types of fuel? P.S Honor is giving you a hint!
Sources of energy Some of the types of energy we use have a bad effect on the environment through pollution and global warming – can you name any of them? Coal Oil Natural gas Why do we use these types of fuel? (Animation on this page: Each energy type fades in + second question.) Can you name any of them? Coal Oil – petrol/diesel/crude oil etc. Natural gas Why do we use these types of fuel? Coal: heats our homes, we use it to create metal and we use it to generate electricity. Oil: we use oil to make all types of fuel for our car and to heat our homes. Natural gas: we use gas to heat our homes and the water we wash with, cook our food and generate electricity. P.S Honor is giving you a hint!

9 Are there greener energy sources?
People are beginning to use sources of energy that are much cleaner, greener and renewable. What is renewable energy? Can you name any types of renewable energy? (Animation on this page: Each energy type fades in + second question.) What is renewable energy? Renewable energy is an energy source that doesn’t run out when it is used. This means we can keep on using it and not worry about it running out! Can you name these types of energy? Wind energy Solar energy Water energy Can you tell us how these types of energy work? The wind causes the turbines to rotate, generating electricity. Solar panels catch the sunlight and use it to generate electricity. Moving water drives the turbines around which generates electricity. Wind Energy Solar Energy Water Energy Can you tell us how these types of energy work?

10 Can you guess what these construction sites are doing to reduce their impact on the environment?
B. (Animation on this page: Each picture fades in.) Answers: A = Sites are separating their waste into recyclable and non-recyclable. B = Sites are building habitats for local wildlife and making sure they have somewhere to live once the project is finished. In this picture, the site workers are building an otter holt. C = Sites are protecting trees in and around the site and are planting more if any need to be cut down. D = Sites are reducing their carbon footprint by using renewable energy to power their site offices. C. D.

11 What can YOU do to help? Save electricity Recycle as much as possible
Walk or cycle instead of driving Save water (Animation on this page: Each example comes in from the left) Can you think of anything you can do to help before we tell you? Turn off lights when you leave a room. Recycle as much of your waste as possible; plastic, cardboard, glass and leftover food! Instead of getting in the car and being driven somewhere close-by, why not walk or ride your bike? Turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth, shower instead of having a bath. Remember to always put your litter in correct bins, do not just leave it on the floor – it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose! Do not leave litter

12 Group work! Now we’re going to find out who has the biggest carbon footprint! Get into groups of 2/3/4 and go to this website. Whoever has the lowest wins! This page is totally optional – only use it if you wish! This should take no longer than 15mins to complete for a group of 4 students. They are multiple choice questions that score your carbon footprint at the end, and suggest where you can improve!

13 What did we learn today? This slide is free for the children/viewers to respond however they wish. Prompts are below if you need them: What we have learned: We have learned what aspects of the natural world make up our environment – all of them! We have learned about the issues our environment is facing and the damage these issues are causing it. We have learned about what sources of energy are causing damage to our environment. We have learned about the renewable sources of energy that are much better for our environment. We have learned about what building sites are doing to help the environment. We have learned about what we can do to help our environment.

14 Thanks for listening! (Animation: None)
