One of first countries to industrialize Why? Resources coal & water for power sources iron to make steel flood of immigrants to supply labor natural resources—timber, oil, land, etc.

War of 1812 allowed England to stop shipping goods to US US industries forced to make goods usually bought from England Textiles begin industrialization in 1789 as British worker Samuel Slater steals plans for factory Northeast US starts industry boom Railroad, coal, iron and oil play huge role To raise money, companies issue stock to people who become part owners of corporations. Not responsible for debt, get profits

4 Continental Europe Industrializes
Belgium is first on continent to industrialize Rich in iron, coal, waterways for transport William Cockerill smuggled secret plans for building spinning machinery out of England which helped his son John eventually build an enormous industrial enterprise in eastern Belgium. Germany develops slowly but is rich in coal. Railroads link key cities. Import British engineers and send students to Britain to learn manufacturing Unified Germany leads to industrial and military might

5 Continental Europe Industrializes
France develops very late—after 1830s Avoids major social and economic problems because of measured, controlled growth Gov’t government helps build railroads 1850’s Was still very agricultural Austria-Hungary- trouble industrializing because difficulty building railroads because of mountains. Spain has trouble developing, lacks transportation because of few of waterways and roads

6 The Impact of Industrialization
Industrialized countries gain wealth and power beyond those that do not develop European powers take advantage of Africa and Asia in order to gain raw materials for their factories and markets for their goods European powers control these foreign lands—imperialism I-R changes life around the world forever Problems that are caused lead to calls for reform
