1 Lesson Objective: You will be able to define and explain what a “pure substance” is.

2 What pieces would be left behind if you destroyed all of this furniture?

3 What would be left behind if you ripped apart this gold?
I use this slide to get students thinking about certain substances and how they are unable to break down into different substances. No matter how much you rip the gold bar apart, it is still going to be gold.

4 What about silver or copper?
I use silver as another example, you could break this bar into a million pieces but it would still be silver.

5 What are “Atoms”?

6 Atom: The smallest unit of matter. Atoms make up EVERYTHING around us.
We are made up of atoms!

7 Do You Recognize These Words?
Hydrogen Oxygen Carbon Helium Neon Sodium Potassium Nitrogen Calcium Aluminum Gold Chlorine Silver Iron Fluorine Krypton

8 Partner Work I have a periodic table at each desk and have students in pairs examine it to see how many of the known elements they recognize.

12 Elements Each element has their own type of atom.
I’m only made up of gold atoms! I’m only made up of silver atoms!

13 Pure Substances: Pure substances cannot be broken down into other substances by physical or chemical means.

14

15 Given the definition, why does it make sense that elements are pure substances?

16 Elements I’m only made up of silver atoms!
I’m only made up of gold atoms!

17 I am a pure substance made up of Copper atoms!
