4 An atom… Is the smallest unit of matter that retains the identity of the substance Atoms are known as the building blocks of all matter What can be found in an atom? It consists of protons, neutrons, and electrons Protons and neutrons are located in the nucleus of an atom Electrons are located in the electron cloud which surrounds the nucleus of an atom accounting for most of the space an atom occupies

5 What are protons, neutrons, and electrons? Protons Positively charged subatomic particles found in the nucleus of an atom Neutrons Subatomic particles found in the nucleus of an atom which are neutral Electrons Negatively charged subatomic particles found orbiting the nucleus of an atom

7 An element… Is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means Consists of one type of atom If you change the number of protons the type of element changes ◦ Examples  Hydrogen consists of one proton and one electron.  Carbon consists of six protons and six electrons.
