THE BILL OF RIGHTS

2 New Vocabulary Federalist: Strong central government
Anti-Federalist: opposed strong central government, And wanted to keep the power to the state Opposed to the Constitution Bill of Rights: a document created that states the rights of the people

3 Today Statement Today we will be learning about the Bill of Rights and how they impact us in our daily lives and at the end of the lesson you will create your own poster on the bill of rights.

4 Limited Government Prevents the Federal government from abusing the PEOPLE The concept is known as LIMITED GOVERNMENT

5 Limited Government Government’s power is NOT unlimited but is EXPRESSED: The Bill of Rights – Added in 1791 Federalists promised Anti-Federalists AND ARTICLE I of the Constitution. lists things Congress CAN NOT do and LIMITS the power of the government

Why did some states support the Constitution and some did not? Answer:Some believed that the Constitution would give too much power to the federal level of government RATIFICATION OF THE CONSTITUTION (link)

7 The Bill of Rights The ONLY reason Anti- Federalists agreed to the Constitution in 1788…. Framers promised to go back and create a BILL OF RIGHTS What did the Bill of Rights Do? ANSWER: Prevents the government from abusing the PEOPLE

8 BILL OF RIGHTS Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition Right to keep and bear arms in order to maintain a well regulated militia No quartering of soldiers Freedom from unreasonable search and seizure Right to due process of law, freedom from self-incrimination, double jeopardy. Right of accused persons ( speedy and public trial) Right of trial by jury Freedom from excessive bail, cruel, and unusual punishments Other rights of the people Power reserved to the states
