4 Course Outline Let’s go over the course outline together:

5 Video Let’s watch a short video that will tell us why statistics is important. Video: Improving Human Welfare in 2013 International Year of Statistics

6 Lecture 1 Chapter 1 Summary
Statistics IS: - collection of tools and methods - a way of reasoning - to help us understand the world Statistics ARE: - particular calculations made from data eg. Average number of pens carried by by STAB22 students. Role of Statistics is to make sense of the complex world. Statistics in a word is about variation.

7 Data Data is plural. Datum is singular.
Data are values along with their context. Data vary will help us understand and model variation help us see the underlying truth and pattern.

8 Three steps to doing statistics
Think -> why? Show -> display and calculations Tell -> Explain your results so that someone else can understand your conclusions For example, computers enable us to get answers (statistics displayed on the outputs). However, we need to think and tell, in order to interpret the answers (statistics).

9 Our Textbook Presents data from real-world problems
Displays data graphically Models step-by-step to doing statistics Provides Just-checking sections Illustrates Math-boxes Tells us how to avoid making mistakes Asks us to reflect on the skills learned Identifies data files with the T beside exercises. Data file exercises are located in the DVD accompanied at the back of the book. I will show you an example on how to locate and open a data file using StatCrunch 

10 Logical Approach A complete solution need to: Explain the context
Show reasoning and calculation State the conclusion

11 Today’s Take-Aways Tell us a few things about today’s meeting and share with our class  - I will organize and update our take-aways for each lecture in a chart like the one presented in the next slide.
