The impact that event had in the SHORT TERM (immediately) and in the LONG TERM (for lots of years after) Short term Changed Same as before Long term England became a republic (a country without a King!) Oliver Cromwell was in charge! He was a Puritan and he banned Christmas for being too much fun! Trade improved and war was over! When parliament disagreed with Cromwell he shut it down! Cromwell grew greedy for power Many Catholics were killed under Cromwell’s reign In 1660 Charles' son Charles II became King and the monarchy was restored (returned) Charles II promised to work better with parliament in order to run the country Charles promised to call parliament every 3 years but there was no rule put in place for this! The religion of the King was very important and the country remained Protestant even though the King became a Catholic on his death bed. Charles II fought many wars with France Parliament in Britain and Spain today! We have a monarchy today and the role is hereditary (handed down from parent to child) The monarchy has no power The power is held by the parliament and ALL people have a vote to decide who the government should be. The parliament has a Prime Minister who runs the government and is elected by the people Many people do not agree with the Monarchy and want a republic People do not believe that Monarchs are chosen by God and their religion is not important Wars are fought with other countries Parliament decides how much money is spent on wars
