Figurative Language Part 3
The one where we talk about Clichés and Symbolism
2
Clichés Cliché is phrase or opinion that is overused and indicates a lack of original thought.
3
Clichés **Cliché are VERY similar to idioms (?)
But they have an important difference
4
Clichés Meaning Idioms have a figurative meaning, not a literal meaning. Clichés may have both figurative and literal meaning.
5
Clichés How to understand this idea better:
Most to all idioms can be clichés, but not every cliché is an idiom… Imagine a chocolate chip cookie. Chocolate chip cookies are idioms. But not every cookie is always a chocolate chip cookie.
6
Clichés Literal Clichés and Reason Why
They all lived happily ever after… Overused, but literally the story is ending in happiness
7

Literal Clichés and Reason Why
As brave as a lion Literally talking about someone’s bravery, using a simile to describe the bravery.
9
Literal Clichés and Reason Why
As fast as lightning Literally talking about someone’s speed, using a simile (and hyperbole) to describe the speed.
10
Figurative Clichés and Reason Why
I was scared to death This can’t be literal because to be actually scared to death means you wouldn’t have been able to say this.
11
Clichés Figurative Clichés and Reason Why Falling head over heels
An expression meaning that you like someone else, not actually tripping over yourself.
12
