EQs: What are the qualities of a memorable speech? What are the parts of persuasive rhetoric?

2 Part I: Persuasive Rhetoric (Techniques)

3 What does “persuasive” mean?
Definition: writing with the intent to convince the reader. There are ways to make an argument stronger, which are called persuasive writing techniques and they can be found in speeches and essays. Purpose: We’re going to practice finding persuasive techniques in speeches so that it will improve your writing.

4 Persuasive Techniques:
Modes of Persuasion: Ethos- appealing to one’s morals, character, honesty (ethics) Pathos- appealing to one’s emotions Logos- appealing one’s sense of logic and reason

5 Persuasive Techniques
Anaphora Definition: repeating words (a phrase) at the beginning of neighboring clauses Example: “I have a dream…”

6 Repetition Definition: Reoccurring words throughout a speech
Repetition Definition: Reoccurring words throughout a speech Can be used to show key themes within a speech.

7 Allusion Definition: A passing or casual reference to another work of literature. Can be direct or an implication.

8 Mentioning proper nouns=
Specific Details Mentioning proper nouns= specific people, places and things within a speech.

9 Metaphors Definition: Comparing two or more things by giving it a new definition Makes the speech more descriptive and powerful

10 Memorable Speeches Include:
People remember them for generations Important in history Persuasive techniques: Modes of persuasion (ethos, pathos, logos), anaphora, allusions, metaphors, specific details, repetition Inspiring Uplifting elements

11 What We Will Read: “Gettysburg Address” by Abraham Lincoln (1863)
2. “I have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. (1963) 3. Presidential Inauguration Speech, 2013 by President Barack Obama

12 Purpose: These speeches are memorable and a part of our history for a reason. We’re going to explore how each author wrote their speech and why they are persuasive. Eventually you will answer this question in a persuasive essay: Is America truly a country of equality?
