3 What is Clearing? It’s a service to show you which universities and courses have places remaining. In 2015, 63,000 students (one in eight of all students starting their studies) were placed via clearing. You can use Clearing if you: Apply after 30 June Didn’t receive any offers (or don’t want to accept) Didn’t meet the conditions of your offers Point 3 is its most commonly-understood function

4 Clearing: first steps You still need to apply through UCAS.
If you submit your UCAS application after 30 June, you won’t be able to add course choices. This isn’t an issue for Clearing. Make a note of your UCAS Clearing number. This is located on the welcome and choices pages in UCAS Track.

5 Clearing: results day If you had conditional offers but your exam results didn't go to plan, you can use Clearing from results day, when Clearing vacancies will be listed on the UCAS search tool and in some newspapers. Clearing vacancies are updated regularly by universities and colleges. If you don't find the course you're looking for straight away, try again later.

6 Clearing: results day Talk on the phone to any university or college you’re interested in. Give them your UCAS Clearing number and your UCAS personal ID number. Ask if they'd accept you – they might reconsider you (maybe for the same course) even if you applied to them earlier in the year. Get informal offers over the phone – maybe from a variety of universities and colleges – then decide which one you want to accept. Take a look around – if you have the time, it's the best way to see what a university/college is like – most will be happy to meet you and show you around.

7 Clearing: results day Add a Clearing choice in UCAS Track once you’ve got permission from the university or college. Fill in the course details. This counts as you definitely accepting the offer, so if they confirm it'll show as an acceptance on the choices page of Track. UCAS will then send you a confirmation letter. Start to think about accommodation: will you live at home or do you need to find a place close to the university or college?

8 Clearing: after results day
If you receive a place through Clearing, the process of starting university or college will be the same for you as it would for any student starting that year. Get in touch with the university or college as soon as possible to ask about accommodation if you need it.
