Do Now Find your seat! Look for your name on the list on the front whiteboard and choose a seat in the corresponding pod. Take a syllabus (on the front table). Complete the student survey (on the front table). You will have five minutes once the bell rings. Note: Do Now's are INDEPENDENT and QUIET exercises. Thank you 

Look over the Poetry Anticipation Guide and write whether you agree or disagree with each statement.

8 Journal heading At the top of your paper, you need: Your name The date
Class/Block Assignment Title (For today, it’s “Defining Poetry”)

Compare your answers with your group. What do you all agree with? What do you all disagree with? 1. Once you identify what your group has in common, use the information with your group to create your own definition of poetry. Make sure you each have something written down – you’ll be expected to share your answers 

3. Now read the other side for Tomas J. Vietorisz’s piece “Beef Stew (serves 6-8).” Is this poetry? Why or why not? Does it fit our class definition of poetry? Be specific in your answer.

13 Exit Slip Write the worst poem you possibly can. As long as it’s school appropriate, you can write anything you want. Just make sure it’s a terrible poem of at least five lines. And remember, you need two things by Friday: A signed copy of your syllabus A creative writing notebook
