1 An overview of the online edition
The online edition of the Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures includes the full content of the bestselling professional edition plus extra features and functionality for both student nurses and lecturers involved in clinical skills training of nursing procedures. With instant and intuitive online access, student nurses and lecturers will find clinical procedure guidelines and essential background reading effortlessly and in minutes.

2 Access the nurses’ area here
Access the administrators’ area here This is the homepage. From here you can navigate the rest of the site. There are two main areas of the site: ‘Nurses’ which is for student access ‘Administrators’ which is for a nominated clinical skills lecturer (optional). This area will be discussed in more detail later on in the presentation. Wherever you are on the site, clicking the red arrow in the bottom right will take you back to the top of that page. The red arrow returns you to the top of the page

3 Browsing

4 Select this tab to browse content
You can browse by chapters, procedures or figures You can view your own University guidelines here Selecting the green ‘Browse RMM’’ tab allows many different ways of browsing content: Browse by the chapter, procedure or figure headings in the top-right of the screen.

Selecting ‘content’, ‘procedures’ or ‘figures’ expands the heading to show a full list of materials Selecting any of these headings will link you directly to the material When browsing by chapter, each chapter title is displayed and selecting either ‘content’, ‘procedures’ or ‘figures’ allows you to see a full list of material appearing in that chapter. Selecting any of the headings will link you directly to the material.

Clicking on ‘subprocedures’ displays a full list of subprocedures as well Procedures and figures can either be viewed by chapter number or alphabetically by selecting one of the headings at the top of the page.

7 Navigate back to higher levels by using the ‘breadcrumb trail’
Navigate backwards or forward through chapters and sections Green boxes indicate the level of evidence Procedures are presented in the familiar ‘action/rationale’ format Each procedure is clearly titled and displayed in the familiar ‘action/rationale’ format. The green boxes within the procedure text indicate the level of evidence. Hovering over these boxes gives a more detailed description. From anywhere in the site you can: Link back to the chapter contents through the ‘breadcrumb trail’ at the top of the page Select either ‘previous chapter’ or ‘next chapter’ Select either ‘previous section’ or ‘next section’ Use the headings down the left-hand side to navigate to another section of the chapter

Hit ‘search’ Enter your search term here Search by all text or procedure-only You can enter a search term into the search box from any page. The drop-down menu allows you to search for the term by full text or just by procedure. The menu always defaults to procedure.

10 Sort the results by chapter or by relevance
Filter the results Sort the results by chapter or by relevance The search term is highlighted in yellow. When you search by an abbreviation, the full term is also searched. All occurrences of the search term are listed. You can choose to sort the results by chapter title or by relevance. You can also filter them so that they just show figures for example. The search term is highlighted in yellow. Notice that searching for a common abbreviation will also search for the term in full.

Clicking on one of the search results will take you directly to that item. Each occurrence of the search term is highlighted in the text but it’s important to note that a result on the results page refers to a whole section of text rather than a single entry.

12 Enter up to three keywords
Select the type of information required Refine your search by selecting ‘and/or’ Clicking on the ‘advanced search’ heading next to the search box will allow you to refine your search. You can enter up to three keywords and select the type of information required from the first drop-down menu.

Clicking on a reference anywhere in the text will take a student to the reference list at the end of the chapter.

From any of the reference pages, students can link directly to PubMed and/or CrossRef. If their institution has access to these resources they will be able to access the full article. This is achieved simply by clicking on the PubMed or CrossRef links next to each item. Link from here to the original article

18 Select this tab to access the help pages
Much of what is explained here is available in the ‘help’ section of the site. Selecting the red ‘help’ tab brings up information on navigation, searching and advanced searching.

21 Insert your administrator’s username and password
The ‘administrators’ section is accessible by a nominated clinical skills lecturer only. This area is accessed via the administrators area on the homepage. The allocated administrator will need to log in separately to access the content management centre.

22 Select this tab to access the content management centre
Selecting the green ‘content management’ tab allows you the option to add or edit University procedures, or add comments to a Marsden Manual procedure guideline to aid student understanding. To add your own guideline, for example on your University’s moving and handling procedures, click ‘add your own procedure guideline’ and complete all relevant fields.

23 Select the procedure you wish to edit from the drop-down menu
To edit your own guideline, click ‘edit your own procedure guideline’. Select the one you wish to edit and complete all relevant fields. A similar screen is displayed if you wish to remove your own procedure guideline.

24 Select the procedure to which you wish to add a comment here
To add a comment to existing guidelines, click ‘add comment to a procedure guideline’ and select the relevant guideline from the drop-down menu. Select the procedure to which you wish to add a comment here

25 Click ‘add comment’ where you wish to add your comment and type into the box which appears
You are then taken to the procedure where there will be grey ‘+’ boxes where you are able to add comments to the equipment, action or rationale. Simply select the point where you wish to add your comment and a box will appear that you can type directly into.

26 You can also add global instructions which will be added to the top of every procedure. This might enable a lecturer to add warning comments to students that they shouldn’t undertake any procedure unless properly trained for example.

27 Your comments will display in grey boxes like these
Any comments you add will display as grey boxes in the procedure. Older comments will display in pink so that it’s easy to see that they are out-of date. Archiving is an automatic process.

28 Downloading figures

29 Click ‘download’ to open or save the figure file
After browsing/searching content for a particular figure simply select the ‘download’ button below the required figure. Click ‘download’ to open or save the figure file
