Note – Homework – Frayer model-Due 8/12 By the end of the day, Scholars will be able to: GPS - SPS2 Students will explore the nature of matter, its classifications, and its system for naming types of matter. Catalyst: Matter-Mart Draw a map of Wal-Mart or another store that you are familiar with. Our goal is 80% understand the nature of matter, its classifications, and its system for naming types of matter. And answer a question like this: Classify the following types of matter as heterogeneous or homogeneous mixtures, or elements or compounds. 1. Mercury (Hg) Topic: Classification of matter Essential Question: How is matter classified?

2 Agenda - Milestones Domain/Weight: Chemical Reactions and Properties of Matter 25%
Catalyst 10 min Classification of matter – interactive power point 30 min Matter - GO 15 min Matter video 7 min Classifying matter worksheet 25min

3 Take out your Wal-Mart drawings.
Warm-Up Take out your Wal-Mart drawings.

4 Matter SPS2. Students will explore the nature of matter, its classifications, and its systems for naming types of matter.

5 Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.

6 Substance A pure form of matter.
Cannot be separated by physically means.

7 Element A substance that contains only one kind of atom.
The symbol only has one capital letter. Is on the Periodic Table.

8 Compound A substance that has two or more types of atoms that are chemically combined. That cannot be separated by physical means. The chemical formula contains two or more compounds. C6H12O6 NaCl

9 Mixture A combination of two or more substances.
They can be physically separated.

10 Homogeneous Mixture A mixture that is evenly mixed throughout.
Looks the same from top, center, and bottom.

11 Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that is not evenly mixed. Does not look the same top, center, and bottom.

12 Activator How can you tell the difference between a Mixture and a Substance? How can you tell the difference between and element and compound? How can you tell the difference between a homogeneous mixture and heterogeneous mixture?
