1 Wednesday 4/18/18 Ancient eruptions from the extinct 5,480-foot Kohala and the 13,796-foot dormant Mauna Kea Volcanoes shaped the mountainous northwest portion of the island, seen above in this Landsat 7 satellite image from January Clouds hover over the lush, dark green forests on the rainier eastern slopes, while drier western slopes appear mostly earthy-brown. The sharp contrast in vegetation is called the rain shadow effect. Notebook Entry: This is a satellite image of a portion of Hawaii’s big island. Notice the dramatic change in vegetation from the northeast side of the island to the west. What factor that affects precipitation could be causing this? Explain your answer.

2 Possible Claims Claim #1: Prevailing winds on the Pacific coast cause extremely low precipitation in the Atacama Desert. Claim #2: The location of mountain ranges causes extremely low precipitation in the Atacama Desert. Claim #3: Surface temperatures of the ocean cause extremely low precipitation in the Atacama Desert. These claims related to 3 factors that scientists know can influence weather and could affect patterns of low precipitation.

3 Task: Collect information on the 3 main factors that affect precipitation
Finish reading, doing and highlighting pages Read, do & highlight pages 54-56 Create 2 Column notes to organize the information you highlighted. Make these in your spiral notebook. Follow the structure below to create your notes. T: Factors that Affect Precipitation These are due tomorrow and while you are working I will check your notes and reading. Note: diagrams can be part of your supporting details
