2. The South was in ruins from the War.
Preparing for Reunion
After the Civil War ended, the nation had major problems, especially in the Southern States.
The South was in ruins from the War.
Homeless Refugees, Both White and African Americans, needed work, food, and shelter.
Abraham Lincoln wanted to make it easy for the southern states to rejoin the union.
The Ten Percent Plan was introduced by Lincoln in December of 1863.
The Ten Percent Plan was a plan to help the Southern States to join the union as quickly as possible, and to help the South Rebuild.

3. The Wade-Davis Bill was passed by congress Six months later.

The Wade-Davis Bill was passed by congress Six months later.
The Wade-Davis Bill was a much stricter plan for reconstruction.
Under that bill, 50 percent of voters would have to sign a loyalty oath before a state could return to the union.
However, Lincoln would not sign this bill, so it never became an actual law.
Lincoln, and other Republicans hoped to see a strong Republican party in the new south.
Lincoln thought his soft plan for reconstruction would win support.
The People said that only a strict plan would work.

4. Freedmen- enslaved people who had been freed by the war.
The Freedmen's Bureau
Freedmen- enslaved people who had been freed by the war.
Congress created the Freedmen's bureau in march of 1865.
Their first duty was to provide emergency relief to people displaced by the war.

5. To pay the teacher, people pooled the teachers pennies and dollars.
Education
Freedmen’s Bureau set up schools to teach Freedmen how to read and write.

Many teachers were northern white women, but there also a lot of African American women.
Before the war, the southern states lacked education. Now public schools educate whites and blacks.
It rose to good institutions like Fisk University in Tennessee and Hampton University in Virginia.

Lincoln hoped for peaceful reconstruction.
Abraham Lincoln was shot dead on April 14, 1865, at Ford's Theater, Five days after Lee’s surrender.
John Wilkes Booth, crept up behind lincoln and his wife, while watching a play at Ford's theater, Booth the proceeded to shoot lincoln in the back of the head with a 44’ caliber pistol.
Booth was shot dead after a two week hunt for the murderer.

Lincoln's body was taken back to illinois to be buried.
Vice President Andrew Johnson took control of the reconstruction, and people thought his method would be too strict.
