2 Who? When? Why? What? Who? All 8th graders in Humble ISD
When? Wednesday, October 10, testing will start at 8:30 and should be done before lunch. Why? Students who take the PSAT 8/9 receive college readiness data that includes a custom study plan designed to help them prepare for the SAT.  You also preview the format of the SAT and have the opportunity to connect with colleges that match their interests and aptitudes. What can I do to prepare? offers FREE PSAT/SAT test prep   

3 How can the PSAT 8/9 benefit me?
You will see how prepared you are for the next level of tests in high school You will receive a plan to help you improve If you score well enough, you can exempt 2 of the 5 required End of Course Exams Algebra I EOC English I EOC

4 What is the PSAT 8/9? More practice before the SAT. Good scores on the PSAT/NMSQT can earn scholarship money. Usually taken in 10th grade Colleges/universities often require minimum scores for entry. Scores are reported to colleges. Taken in 11th or 12th grade 1st look at an SAT formatted test

5 How is PSAT similar to STAAR?
Paper and pencil multiple choice test Answer document and test booklet No electronics in the room during testing (phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers, nothing with internet or Bluetooth capabilities) You can bring a jacket or sweatshirt

6 How is PSAT different from STAAR?
Each section is timed & you may not finish, that is okay Bubble answers as you go. You cannot use a highlighter or mechanical pencil  You cannot have scratch paper You cannot use a dictionary You cannot have drinks or food at your desk You cannot bring anything other than your pencils, an eraser, and a jacket to testing You provide your own calculator

Graphing calculator (like the you use in math) Scientific calculators 4 function (not recommended) SAT Calculator Policy Someone else’s calculator (no sharing) Cell phone, tablets, smart watch (no internet or Bluetooth capabilities One that requires electricity, uses a paper tape, or makes noise

Testing room will not have extra batteries, so have some if you need them Testing room will not have extra calculators, so bring an extra if you think you might need it If your calculator stops working in the middle of the math test, you finish the test without a calculator

9 What will test day look like?
Report to testing room by 8:25 Must have your pencils and ID (nothing else except an eraser) Test proctor will tell you where to sit Answer document will be given to you. It is already pre-coded. Do not put anything on it unless directed by the test proctor

10 What will test day look like?
You will have to fill out information about yourself on the answer document You must know: Your address (to verify on the pre-code) An address other than the one for school. This can be parent’s or your own personal Your GPA (grade point average)

11 How to calculate your grade point average. Look in HAC
B (80-89) = 3 C (75-79) = 2 D (70-74) = 1 F (69 and below) = 0 (# of A’s x 4) + (# of B’s x 3) + (# of C’s x 2) + (# of D’s x 1) + (# of F’s x 0) = X, X/7 = GPA Example: 3 A’s = 12, 2 B’s = 6, 2 C’s = 4 = 22, 22/7 = 3.14 1 A = 4, 4 B’s = 12, 1 C = 2, 1 F = 0 = 20, 20/7 = 2.86

12 What will test day look like?
Before testing Section 1 Section 2 Section 3 Section 4 Check pre-codes, fill in information about you Reading Writing and Language Math – no calculator Math – with calculator 55 minutes 30 minutes 20 minutes 40 minutes 5 min. break If you go to the restroom or to get a drink during testing, you will not get extra time on the test If you leave the room during break time, you will have to be silent in the halls. Not all testing rooms will be on break at the same time
