1 Links in Technical Objects

2 Links A link refers to the connection between two components of an object. There are different characteristics of this connection that we need to think about.

3 Criteria 1: Direct or Indirect
Direct: The link does not require a linking component.

4 Criteria 1: Direct or Indirect
Direct: The link does not require a linking component. Indirect: The link does require a linking component (ex: screw, glue, etc)

5 Criteria 2: Rigid or Flexible
Rigid: The linking is not flexible (it cannot be bent out of shape).

6 Criteria 2: Rigid or Flexible
Rigid: The linking is not flexible (it cannot be bent out of shape). Flexible: The link can be deformed when used and has the ability to return to its initial position.

7 Criteria 3: Removable or Permanent?
Removable: You can separate the two linked items without breaking the object.

8 Criteria 3: Removable or Permanent?
Removable: You can separate the two linked items without breaking the object. Permanent: You cannot separate the two linked items without breaking the object.

9 Criteria 4: Complete or Partial?
Complete: The link does not allow the two connecting parts to be moving independently.

10 Criteria 4: Complete or Partial?
Complete: The link does not allow the two connecting parts to be moving independently. Partial: The two connecting parts can move independently.

15 Guiding controls the motion of an object
Guiding controls the motion of an object. There are 3 types of guides and movements:

16 1. Translational: This allows translational movement (up-and-down, or left-to-right movement)

17 2. Rotational: This allows rotational movement (spinning around something).

18 3. Helical: This type of guide allows translational motion of a moving part while it rotates (combination of translational and rotational).

19 Work Period Finish up your helmet lab. It will be collected on Thursday. Links and Guides practice: Workbook page (#1-2, 4-7). This is not for homework yet, but it will be eventually.
