2 Why did Ruri’s family have to leave home?
Ruri's family had to leave their home because the U.S and Japan were at war and every Japanese person in the U.S had to go to concentration camps.

3 Why does Laurie give Ruri a bracelet?
Laurie gives Ruri a bracelet, so she can remember her.

4 The barracks were used as horse stalls.
What were the barracks used for before Ruri 
and her family came to live there? The barracks were used as horse stalls.

5 What lesson does Ruri learn?
Ruri learns that material things are not as important as the memories in people's hearts.

6 How do you think the living arrangement for Ruri’s family adds to the emotions the family is already experiencing? The living conditions at the concentration camps were horrible, depressive and sad just like the feelings that the family must have had because of the situation.

Identify the two settings in this story. Why are both so important to the plot? The two settings of the story are: their house in Berkeley, California and the Tanforan Racetracks where they were held. They are important because they show the horrible circumstances that the family lived in.

It was an enormous building in San Francisco, with an elevator and thick carpeted hallways. I thought of how wonderful it would be to have our own elevator.
