1 9/ th Grade Agenda Science Notebook: Decline in Monarch Butterfly Population #2 Video: Great Migrations

2 Why is the Monarch Population Declining?
Glyphosate is a herbicide. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the US and it is found in a populate weed killer called Roundup Glyphosate kills most plants

3 How does Glyphosate kill plants
Glyphosate prevents plants from making certain proteins that are needed for plant growth. Glyphosate is killing the milkweed plants growing near the field

4 Glyphosate doesn’t kill corn and soy beans created by Monsanto. Why?
Monsanto created Genetically modified (GMO) corn and soybeans that are resistant to Glyphosate Farmers buy these (GMO) corns and soybeans and spray Glyphosate all over their fields

5 If farmers continue to use Glyphosate, what will happen to the Milkweed plants?

6 Other causes of Monarch Butterfly Population decline
Deforestation of Oyamel Fir Forest Erratic Weather Too many new buildings in California (destroying western monarchs overwinter sites)
