Consider a few factors before you choose: Be kind. Look around you. Don’t just choose friends. I will make the groups if I feel that someone is getting left out… You want to work with someone you can count on to the work You want to work with someone who feels comfortable doing presentations with You want to work with someone you know won’t make YOU do all the work!

6 Non-fiction review Non- fiction = TRUE STORY (REAL people & REAL events) Characters, setting, and events must conform to what is true Story cannot be manipulated by the writer’s imaginative; There is NO plot line Your textbooks are non-fiction An author may express his/her opinion on a topic while still addressing the facts There are different methods of discourse (written communication) See next slide

7 Choice of discourse Even though a book is non-fiction, the author will still choose the manner of discourse: Exposition Writer’s purpose is to INFORM; Most objective type of non-fiction; Facts are presented neutrally; Author’s opinion on the subject DOES NOT intrude Persuasion Attempts to influence the reader’s ideas or actions; Major purpose is to convince the reader to think feel, or act in a certain way; Writer selects and arranges facts so that the reader will share the writer’s opinion Description Presents a picture/ impression of a subject; re-creates for the reader a person, place, event, etc.; Usually uses the 5 senses Narration Author’s purpose is to relate a series of events; Events usually take place in choronological order; Has the form of a store, but the events are factual and actually recorded; Author depicts characters, may even use dialogue

9 Read intro as a class (Pages 3-11)
Summary points: An outlier is something that is classified differently from other items in its similar group, such as a city that is different from other cities. Gladwell's first example of an outlier is the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania in the first half of the 20th century. Roseto was founded by Italian immigrants in the late 19th century and is centered around a local slate quarry business.

10 Summary continued… The residents of Roseto are remarkably healthy when compared to other Americans. This makes Roseto an outlier. The local doctor says in the many years of treating the people of Roseto he has rarely seen anyone with heart disease.

11 Summary conclusion The researcher then decides there must be something about the town itself which is different from others. •He finds that the town has a strong sense of community. People are very social and several generations of families live together. It seems that the research indicates it is not who the people are that is the factor in health but where they are.
