2 Article 1 Established the legislative branch, known as Congress
Congress has two “houses”: the Senate and the House of Representatives

3 Article 1 cont. Congress makes the laws
Grants Congress the sole authority to create legislation Declare war The right to confirm or reject Presidential appointments Gives Congress substantial investigative powers Power to impeach the President or Supreme Court Justices

4 Article II Established the executive branch
Established the offices of President and Vice-President

5 Article II cont. Executive branch enforces the laws
President is Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy Power to create treaties Appoint ambassadors, judges and officers

6 Article III Established the Judicial branch
Established the Supreme Court Established “inferior courts as the Congress may…establish” (Federal Courts, and State Courts)

7 Article III cont. The Supreme Court interprets the laws
The Supreme Court decides all disputes between states or concerning foreign ambassadors. The Supreme Court can hear appeals of other cases.

8 Articles IV, V, VI, and VII Article IV: States
Article V: The Amending Process Article VI: The Supreme Law of the Land Article VII: Ratification

Any power specifically listed in the Constitution Implied Power Power given that is not explicitly stated in the Constitution, AKA Necessary and Proper clause Collect Taxes Borrow Money/ Coin Money Regulate foreign & interstate commerce Declare War Grant Copyrights Establish naturalization laws Support public schools Create Banks Power to prohibit discrimination in restaurants and other public accommodations Raise & support an army Power to limit number of immigrants to the US

10 Checks and Balances Powers given to each branch to keep the other two branches from becoming too powerful

11 Checks and Balances Judicial branch checks the Executive branch by declaring the presidential actions unconstitutional. Legislative branch checks the Executive branch by refusing to approve treaties. Executive branch checks the Judicial branch by appointing judges. Legislative branch checks the Judicial branch by impeaching judges. Executive branch checks the Legislative branch by vetoing legislation. Judicial branch checks the Legislative branch by declaring acts of legislature unconstitutional.
