4 Common Nouns Name a general… –Person: astronaut, boy, teacher –Place: city, town, state –Thing: book, spitball, dinner –Idea: reality, peace, success

7 Singular / Plural Nouns The following are the most common ways to make singular nouns plural: Most nouns add –s (dogs, flowers, monkeys) Some nouns add –es (dresses, boxes, bushes) Some nouns change the y to i and add –es (flies, enemies, ladies)

8 Singular / Plural Nouns Here are other ways to make plural nouns: Some plural nouns are formed irregularly (mouse – mice; woman – women; tooth – teeth) Some nouns are the same in the singular and plural forms (sheep, deer, moose, aircraft, species)

9 Possessive nouns show ownership! For singular Possessive nouns: the pencils owned by the girl: the girls pencils the collar owned by the dog: the dogs collar For Plural Possessive Nouns: the pencils owned by the girls: the girls pencils the collars owned by the dogs: the dogs collars irregular plural Possessive nouns: the dresses owned by the women: the womens dresses

12 When a noun is about to wear itself out in a sentence, use a pronoun! Lets look at an example…

13 The proper noun Meg needs a break… Meg stepped to the end of the diving board and looked down. Meg then turned back and looked longingly at Megs brother, who was perched safely on the ladder, smiling. Meg knew this was it. One! Two! Three! Meg ran to the end of the board, leaped, tucked, and made one and one half turns, then straightened out like an arrow and hit the water cleanly. Meg knew Meg had made the best dive of Megs life.

15 Pronouns Pronouns are substitutes for nouns; Pronouns are the stunt doubles for nouns. Pronouns function in sentences as nouns do Example: –Susanne Ling enlisted in the Air Force when Susanne Ling graduated. –Susanne Ling enlisted in the Air Force when she graduated.

One of the film projectors is broken, and it must be repaired. The students complained to the principal about the new rule. They wished he had consulted them about it. 19 Pronouns Identify the possessive pronoun(s) in each of the following sentences. Mine has a flat tire. The CD is hers. We havent received ours yet. The subject of my report is dolphins. His first novel was published in 1982. Do you have their telephone number?

20 Lets Review… Read this passage, adapted from Cynthia Lords book, Rules. In the passage, find the requested pronoun form. Find: 4 singular pronouns, 2 plural pronouns, and 5 possessive pronouns. By the time I get to the living room, Davids already crouched in front of the fish tank, his smiling face reflected its glass. Out the window behind the aquarium, I see Mom in the yard talking to the mailman. And in the fish tank, one of my old Barbie dolls sits on the gravel, her arm raised in a friendly wave, as though she has spotted Ken across the living room and is inviting him to join her. The goldfish are used to David dropping strange beings into their tank. They always swim over to check out the newest arrivals and try to eat them. When that doesnt work, they accept them, along with their usual plastic plants and little castle.
