10 What Science Isn’t: Pseudoscience: Anything that is not proven empirically is not science! Empirically: by means of observation and experimentation

13 Pseudoscience Often based on anecdotal evidence (hearsay or word of mouth) Selective use of data- individuals pick data that fits their conclusion Other examples of Pseudoscience Extraterrestrial visitors Advertising claims Example: The manufacturer of Nivea advertised that regular use of its My Silhouette cream would slim and reshape the body

14 Being a Skeptical Thinker
Look for evidence or independent conformation of facts from several different sources Be open to different viewpoints Quantify where possible Consider many hypotheses Is the question open to experimentation?

Work in groups of 3. One student will be the “transmitter”, one the “receiver”, & one the “recorder”. The Transmitter will attempt to mentally send the image on to the Receiver The Receiver says what image they receive Receiver does NOT see the cards at any time!!!!! Recorder writes down whether Receiver is correct or incorrect on the Receiver’s lab paper Continue until 15 images have been transmitted Switch roles until each student has a turn as the Receiver DATA 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15
