4 Official break up letter that declared the colonists were free from Great Britain.
Written at the Second Continental Congress. Motivated colonists to fight in the war to keep their independence There were 56 signers of the Declaration. July 4th, 1776 is when the declaration was ratified August 2, 1776: Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton (representatives from Georgia) sign the Declaration of Independence The Declaration meant the colonists were one nation; Georgians prepared for war

7 PART 1: PREAMBLE Purpose: to state why the Declaration of Independence was written. It explains what the document will do: explain the reasons that push the colonists to separate from Great Britain

Purpose: Declare, as reps of American people, colonies independent of Great Britain Powers to declare and wage war Power to conclude Peace Establish commerce

The Declaration of Independence was like a break up letter, a letter from one person to another to break off a relationship. For this assignment your task is to imagine and create a conversation between the colonists and Great Britain as if they were a couple breaking up. You may work with one partner from this class period. Your conversation should follow the template set up by Thomas Jefferson. Preamble: state why you are having this “talk” Declaration: what do you (colonists) want in a “relationship” with government Grievances: what has Britain done wrong in your current relationship Resolution: as a result of this poor treatment, what you are going to do now Remember: this is based on a real event so your conversation must be based on actual events listed in the Declaration of Independence. You may speak in the vernacular of your time. Have fun and be creative. First two Lines have been done for you: Colonists: Britain, we need to have a talk and youre not gonna like what I have to say.
