6 Common Sense With your partner/HRT, read pages 170 and 171 and answer the following questions. What was written in January 1776? Where was this writing published? Who was the author? What did this writing do? How did the author describe King George III? Who would be better off if they governed themselves? How many copies were sold? What did Paine’s pamphlet increase in the American Colonies? What did the Virginia Resolution proclaim? Who introduced this resolution? Who was given the task of composing the declaration of separation from Britain? Why? What message was being conveyed by this declaration?

10 The Declaration of Independence
There are four (4) parts/sections to the “Declaration of Independence THE PREAMBLE OR INTRODUCTION: This explains why the declaration was written. Dissolves the political bonds between the United States and England.

11 DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
2. Declaration of Natural Rights: 3 parts. A. “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are create equal” B. Unalienable rights: Cannot be taken away 1. LIFE 2. LIBERTY 3. THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS The right to abolish their government and create another if these rights are violated WHAT DO THESE RIGHTS MEAN TO YOU?

3. Grievances - Against the King which states… -The British government had in fact violated the rights of the colonies -Lists the grievances or complaints against King George III of England 4. Dissolving the Bonds - Simply stated… - Declaring independence from England

13 The Declaration of Independence
JULY 2, Congress resolves to accept “DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE” JULY 4, 1776-The delegates “officially” APPROVE THE “DECLARATION” President of the congress John Hancock signs the document.

AUGUST 2, 1776: A majority of the delegates sign the “Declaration” Signed by… 38 of the delegates including Benjamin Franklin John Adams, Samuel Adams Thomas Jefferson.

The “Declaration” forced Americans to decide what side they were on. To fight or not to fight. Remain loyal to England or not. If you were a colonist what would you have done and why? Think-pair-share
