4 Population Concentrations
There are 5 main areas of population concentrations in the world Southeast Asia-Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand – lots of political instability in the late 1800s and early 1900s – fast growing population Western and Central Europe – Large cities (London, Moscow, Paris) dominate – mostly urbanized and industrialized – good farmlands but little agriculture

5 Population Concentrations
There are 5 main areas of population concentrations in the world Northeastern United States and Canada – East Coast from Washington DC through Boston (US) and Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal – more than half the US and Canadian populations live in these areas – very urban and industrialized

6 Measuring Growth Linear – even number growth across time – a community of 100 people have 10 people born each month…at the end of the year there will be 220 people Exponential – even percentage growth across time – the population grows by 10% each month…at the end of the year there will be 348 people

7 Thomas Malthus – On Population
Late 1700s - Malthus was afraid the population was growing faster than agricultural output – this would eventually lead to a starvation pandemic He was correct about population growth but incorrect about agricultural growth His predictions were pre-Industrial Revolution - significant advances in technology made farming more efficient and effective on less land

8 Demographic Transition Model**
Stage One: Hunting and Gathering Societies Stage Two: Agricultural Societies Stage Three: Industrial Societies Stage Four: Tertiary (Ter-she-airy) Societies (Service-based)
