1 Unit 2 – Graphic design practice
In this unit, you will explore design disciplines, examine the work of recognised designers and use their understanding of design components to identify successful design practice. This is how it will be achieved: You will be given one discipline, chose/select some work by a recognised designer in that discipline and create your own piece of graphic design, taking inspiration from your research and using components found in the work of your chosen designer. The design project You have been asked to market a singer, band, sporting personality, TV show or Game. You will create a print design to go onto a T-shirt. The print must include digital work and fabric paint. The design must relate to the “POP Art” movement and your inspiration must link to the work of an artist within this movement.

2 Learning outcome 1 You will show that you understand the work of recognised graphic designer. You need to know and show the following: Examples of design practice in a chosen discipline (Pop Art) Recognised graphic designers in a chosen discipline (Pop Art) The characteristics of design practice Example Grading descriptors Example Pass: Relates information from at least two sources. You will communicate some defining characteristics of design within the “POP Art” discipline, using at least two sources to obtain information. Merit: Relates information from different formats from at least two sources You will communicate the main characteristics of design within the “POP Art” discipline, using information from at least two sources and in at least two different formats. Distinction: Relates information from different formats from different types of sources commenting on the credibility of sources You will communicate the main characteristics of design work within their chosen discipline using a range of different sources from different formats to obtain information. They will state which sources have the most value and why. Where do I look for this evidence? Look at your Artwork and the annotations – have you mentioned these key words? Look at your design ideas and the design annotations. Look at your research on a designer and the developments you made to your artwork. Have mentioned these keywords in detail?

3 Learning outcome 2 Grading descriptors Example
You will: Produce a graphic design inspired by the work of a chosen graphic designer. You must demonstrate the use of: Technical skills Processes Techniques Equipment Material Composition Grading descriptors Example Grading descriptors Example Pass: Selects and uses technical skills or processes You will create a piece of graphic design, using all of the relevant graphic design components, in response to a graphic designer’s work. This would demonstrate application of technical skills. Merit: Selects and uses a combination of the most appropriate technical skills/processes/ equipment/material You will create a piece of graphic design, using all of the relevant graphic design components in response to the chosen graphic designer’s work. This would demonstrate effective application of technical skills, they may be inconsistently applied. Distinction: Selects and uses a combination of the most appropriate relevant skills, equipment, materials and processes You will create a piece of graphic design, using all of the relevant graphic design components, in response to the chosen graphic designer’s work. This would demonstrate effective, consistent application of technical skills. Where do I look for this evidence? Look at your Artwork and the annotations – have you mentioned these key words? Look at your design ideas (design sheets) and the design annotations. Look at your mood board, page layout, font development and logo development.

4 Learning outcome 3 Review your graphic design by evaluating the following: How your design reflects the work of the graphic designer Your technical skills Your use of graphic design components Ways of improving Grading descriptors Example Pass: Makes detailed conclusions You will give detailed conclusions about their own work but they may have limited evidence of how it is made in response to the chosen graphic designer. You will cover the appropriate use of technical skills and appropriate graphic design components and provide justification for their selections. However, learners will inconsistently link this to the chosen graphic designer. Merit: Makes detailed conclusions related to their graphic design You will give detailed conclusions about their own work and they will have evidence of how it is made in response to the chosen graphic designer. You will cover the appropriate use of technical skills and appropriate graphic design components and provide justification for their selections Distinction: Makes detailed conclusions related to their graphic design and suggested improvements You will cover the appropriate use of technical skills and appropriate graphic design components and provide justification for their selections which is clearly linked to the chosen graphic designer. Learners will suggest ideas for the effective improvement of future work/their own practice. Where do I look for this evidence? Look at your testing samples Look at your design ideas annotation comment and how/where you suggest improvements The evidence for this is all about your design ideas and the developments. It is looking at your journey to a final solution so annotations, numbering of ideas, hand drawings and font designs including digital art work is very important as this builds a story for the reader.
