2. Physical Development Initially growth slows down, the body
Stabilizes following infant growth
Strengthens core in preparation for adolescences
Repairs following rapid growth
Jaw develops in preparation for ‘adult teeth.
At approx. 6 years ‘adult teeth’ are calcified and begin to erupt to push out ‘baby teeth’.
This process is usually completed by 13 years old
Approaching growth rapidly increases again. Bones harden and get heavier.
Fine motor skills become more precise. Holding a pen, cup, using scissors.
Voluntary muscle control improves.
Coordination and physical strength improves dramatically.

3. Social Development
Children start to see that others (not just primary care giver) can meet certain needs.
Once school starts child begins to associate friends with a positive feeling. (impact on the emotional health)
School setting provides understanding of rules and procedures. Mixing with other age groups.
Friends teach children consequences of negative behaviour (‘best friend one day’).

4. Emotional Development
Children continue to learn basic emotions and the expressions of them. eg Crying only when hurt, not laughing at inappropriate times.
New emotions enter - such as desire, embarrassment.
Starts to understand the emotions of others (occurs toward end of this stage)

5. Intellectual Development
3 - 4 YEARS OLD
Match primary colours
Repeats 3 digit numbers
Uses plurals
Asks questions, tell amazing stories
5 - 6 YEARS OLD
Learns to add and subtract
Learns to read
Has up to 2500 words in vocab
Uses complex sentences (has start, middle & end)
YEARS OLD
Long term memory improving
Learns concept of money
Uses concrete and logical thinking
Begins problem solving and initial abstract thought.
Understand others may have different opinions.
