Rule 1: Be Clear and Concise! (Make it Plain!) Rule 2: Having a Compelling “Newsworthy” Story - Explain why what your writing about might interest readers and/or impact a broad community of people. Rule 3: Think and Write Like a Reporter (or a Blogger) - Mimic the structure and language of newspaper article or blog post Rule 4: Provide Quotes - Provide the targeted media outlet with snappy, ready-to-use quotes. Rule 5: Edit, Edit, and Edit again - Make it as easy as possible for the targeted media outlet to use your material. Rule 6: Target Media Outlets Thoughtfully - Send to reporters/bloggers who write on your issue, that you have developed a relationship with, that cover the district or politics in general Rule 7: Personally Contact Target Media Outlets Sources: CBSNews, How to Write Press Releases;

Subject line/Headline: Write a short, catchy Subject line and Headline (A Tweet). - What is the point/issue? Why should people care? Why is it urgent? Date and City: Introductory Paragraph: Get to the Point –summarize your subject in the first paragraph. Body: In one or two paragraphs, describe the issue, or legislation and the position of your organization. Quotes: Provide quotes that reinforce your key points/concerns Call to Action: Provide readers with instructions for how to get involved or take action About your Organization: Brief background statement our organization (Mission Statement).
