1 LAN NETWORK Design Project
University of Houston Datacom II Lecture 1A Dr Fred Zellner LAN NETWORK Design Project 1/12/2019 Datcom II

2 OBJECTIVE Students to gain experience in designing LANs according to given specifications. Students will learn about current networking products, the cost of implementing LANs and design trade offs. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

3 DESCRIPTION Student will determine the cost of various network components as NICs, Switches, Wiring, Print Servers, ad Remote Access Devices. They will design various LANs to meet the needs of a small work group, medium sized company, medium sized company connected to the Internet. Students will work in groups and present their design to the class. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

Procedure Part 1 Data collections from catalogs and World Wide Web. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

5 Network Interface Cards
Determine the cost of 10Mbps twisted pair only PCI card network interface cards (Ethernet, single quantity). Collect data for three manufactures and average cost. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

6 Network Interface Cards
Do the same procedure for 10/100Mbps Ethernet cards. On the average how much more per card do the 10/100Mbps cards cost? Does it pay to purchase 10Mbps NICs any longer? Can you differentiate product capability between the less expensive cards and the more expensive cards for ether 10Mbps or 100Mbps cards? 1/12/2019 Datcom II

7 Hubs & Switches HUB technology is often described by cost per port for an 8 port hub for each of the following technologies: 10 Base-T (10Mbps), Dual speed 10/100Mbps switches. Make sure that the components have similar characteristics and capability. Determine the average for each technology by average the cost of three manufactures offerings in each category. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

8 Wiring Calculate the cost per foot (using 1000 Foot Bulk) of category 3and 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) , Thin Ethernet (Coaxial) and Fiber Optics. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

9 Design of a small work group LAN
PART 2 Design of a small work group LAN You are to design an inexpensive, but reliable, network for a small work group that consists of 8 personal computers located within 50 feet of a central location, all on the same floor. The network loading density is be considered very low and the cost should be kept to minimum value, not to effect Quality of Service. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

10 Part-3 Design of a LAN for an entire company
You are to design a network for a small company that is located on 4 floors, with a wiring closet on each floor. The average distance from each PC to the nearest wiring closet is 25 feet and the distances between wiring closets is 30 feet. There are no more than 24 PCs, Servers, Printers on each floor. Most of the traffic on the network will be on the floor upon which it is originated, except traffic to one server which can be located on any floor. That server should have a high speed connection to the network Each individual PC will not place a significant load on the network and therefore does not need an high speed interface. There should be two laser printers, connected to a print server, on each floor. The network should be designed to insure that network traffic on each floor can occur simultaneously with traffic on the other floors. Make three proposals: For a network according to the given specifications. Allow for 25% growth. Anticipating the need for High Speed (100Mbps) connections everywhere. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

11 Part-4 Connection of the Company LAN designed in Part-3 to the Internet
Given the LAN designed in part-3, determine what hardware components would be required to connect the LAN to the Internet. Consider two Alternatives: ISDN T-1 connection Include the necessary hardware for remote dialing accesses to the LAN. 1/12/2019 Datcom II

12 Summary All drawings should be professionally presented
Summary All drawings should be professionally presented. A Economic Feasibility should be considered that will not reduce the Quality Of Service (QOS). 1/12/2019 Datcom II
