1 MT 1: Ecology Understand how water, carbon, and nitrogen are cycled through abiotic and organic (biotic) factors in an ecosystem. Set up Cornell Notes! Play Video “Jump”

2 Draw & Label The Water Cycle

3 What are the Basic Steps of H2O Cycle?
Evaporation – liquid to gas; ex boiling water Transpiration – evaporation from plants, trees Condensation – gas cooling and forming liquid; ex dew on cold drink, foggy bathroom mirror Precipitation – collection of water formed from condensation; ex rain, snow, sleet

4 Why do we need the water cycle?
To cycle water between abiotic factors and organic (biotic) factors! Organisms need water to live What are the abiotic factors in the water cycle? What are the organic (biotic) factors in the water cycle?

5 What are the processes that move water between abiotic and biotic resources?
clouds, air, water Condensation, Precipitation Evaporation, Transpiration Organic (Biotic): Plants, animals, organisms

6 Draw & Label The Carbon Cycle

7 Why do we need the carbon cycle?
To cycle carbon between abiotic factors and organic (biotic) factors! Organisms need carbon to make molecules in their bodies (ex: glucose)

8 Why do we need the oxygen cycle?
To cycle oxygen between abiotic factors and organic (biotic) factors! Organisms need oxygen to make ATP (energy cells can use) from cellular respiration.

9 Plants, animals, organisms (O2)
What are the processes that move carbon/oxygen between abiotic and biotic resources? Abiotic: Atmosphere (CO2) Breathing, Cellular Respiration, Decomposition, Burning fossil fuels, Volcanic activity Photosynthesis Organic (Biotic): Plants, animals, organisms (O2)

10 Draw & Label The Nitrogen Cycle

11 Why do we need the nitrogen cycle?
To cycle nitrogen between abiotic factors and organic (biotic) factors! Organisms need nitrogen to make proteins and DNA

12 What are the processes that move nitrogen between abiotic and biotic resources?
Atmosphere (N2) Denitrification: nitrates into nitrogen gas Nitrogen fixation: nitrogen gas into nitrates Organic (Biotic): Plants, animals, bacterial organisms (NH3-, NH4+)
