2 Carl Jung Analytical Theory- Personality/ behaviors are determined by the unconscious Like Freud Unlike Freud, no development theory

3 Jung and Personality Structure of personality development:
Conscious- the ego Personal unconscious- easily accessible, contains repressed thoughts, experiences, and ideas Complexes- clusters of emotionally important thoughts Like Freud, but Freud is too narrow… its NOT all sex!

4 Jung and Personality Structure of personality development:
Collective unconscious- the universal experiences of man Collective experiences… similar behaviors shared by all Behaviors inherited from past generations We all react about the same to emotions, feelings, experiences Collections of ideas occur over and over

5 Jung and Personality Archetypes: memories of universal experiences and the symbolic tendencies to respond in certain ways Symbols that form the basic understanding of human life Behavior is the dominance of one relative to the others Universal mythical character in the collective unconscious Theories are based on historical, artistic, and occult evidence Four: Persona, Animus (ying/ yang), Shadow (counter ego), and Self Others- the Hero, the Trickster, Great Mother, Father, Child, Maiden, Wise Old Man, Jock, Cheerleader, Devil, etc.

6 Jung and Personality Individuation- development of the individual separate from the collective, and creation of a whole personality Unconscious brought to a conscious level Integrating opposites

7 Jung and Personality Complexes lead to maladjustment
Goal of therapy- study and deal with complexes within yourself to reveal unknown motivations of behavior Therapy methods: Self-analysis- which archetype fits you? what do you think?? Interpret yourself/ Know yourself to accept others Word association tests- first word that comes to mind Dream analysis

Four Character types: thinking or feeling sensing or intuiting introvert or extrovert judging or perceiving Rational/ Irrational
