Information Processing Model

2 Information Processing
Learning new skills and having the ability to select and apply these skills depends on your ability to process information. This is a MENTAL factor impacting on performance.

3 Information Processing
Information processing is your reaction to a stimulus. This means your brain makes sense of the information received from a stimulus and then sends messages to the appropriate muscle groups and stores this in your memory. This happens in 4 stages.

4 Information Processing Model
Input Decision Making Output Feedback

5 Input This is the information you receive from your senses. This could be: Visual-watching the shuttle/watching an opponent, instructions or feedback from a teacher Verbal-a call or shout Touch-grip of the racquet Kinaesthetic-feeling of joints and limbs during actions Relevant information is then selected, interpreted and used to make decisions.

6 Decision Making This stage involves making decisions based on the input received. This relies on memory of experience in a previously similar situation. The more experienced player, the easier they can make decisions on the information received. These decisions affect WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, and HOW the performer will respond.

7 Output This is the way in which you decide to move and respond to the decisions you have made.

8 Feedback During and after your chosen response you will receive information about your performance. This feedback is the final part of the loop. This will help future performance as you can discover the effectiveness of your actions.
