3 Act 3 Scene 3: Romeo’s dramatic reaction
Thursday 19th October 2017 C/L Act 3 Scene 3: Romeo’s dramatic reaction LESSON OBJECTIVE: To engage with how we know that Romeo is being dramatic about being banished. LESSON OUTCOME: To contrast him with Juliet in a clear contrastive paragraph.

4 Act 3 Scene 3 Romeo is hiding with the Friar.
Romeo is dramatic about being banished from Verona. There's a knock at the door, Friar is afraid it is the Prince’s men and tells Romeo to hide. Luckily, it's only the Nurse at the door. She and the Friar try to deal with Romeo, who keeps threatening really mature things like stabbing himself out of guilt for hurting Juliet. The Friar has a plan that Romeo and Juliet can have one night together before Romeo leaves Verona. Later, he promises, they'll be able to figure out a way to get Romeo pardoned by the Prince so he can come back to Verona and make his marriage to Juliet public knowledge. Hearing this plan, Romeo recovers and runs off to see Juliet. Quick Brain Snack: marriages in the Catholic Church weren't consider valid unless they'd been consummated—i.e., the two people had to have sex. If Juliet and Romeo don't sleep together, Juliet's dad will be able to get the marriage declared invalid and marry her off to Paris.

5 Let’s read After I will be asking you to record quotations that show how Romeo is being dramatic. Keep your eyes out for them as we read.

6 Give me 5 Write down 5 quotations that show that Romeo is being really dramatic. Challenge: Underline key words for each one that are the most dramatic parts of the quotation.

7 How do we know that Juliet is more mature than Romeo?
In the previous scene, Juliet had been quite insightful and told herself to stop crying once she had realised that Romeo had to kill Tybalt; otherwise Tybalt would have killed Romeo. She wishes she was dead yet that’s a combination of losing Tybalt AND Romeo. Once she realises that Romeo HAD to kill Tybalt she gets the Nurse to find Romeo and is calmer.

8 Write a paragraph CONTRASTING Romeo and Juliet.
CONTRASTIVE CONNECTIVES However Whereas Yet Write a paragraph CONTRASTING Romeo and Juliet. Statement, Evidence and Analyse a Romeo quotation from Act 3 Sc 3 CONTRASTIVE WORD OR PHRASE Statement, Evidence and Analyse a Juliet quotation from Act 3 Sc 2 Word Bank immature dramatic theatrical impractical Romeo’s reaction to his banishment is very dramatic because even though he has been granted banishment instead of the Prince’s promised punishment of death, he cries to the Friar in Act 3 Scene 3 that “there is no world outside of this city.” This reveals that he is being very hyperbolic because he can find another life outside of Verona but he is refusing to due to his passion and commitment to Juliet. Also it demonstrates how he is immaturely not appreciating that he was given a better option to be banished than to die, he is instead only seeing the worst part of his situation. However Juliet’s reaction to Romeo’s banishment is more mature, because whilst she was very upset and did claim that it was as bad as her mother and father being dead too, she soon realises that she needs to stop crying and she says “_______________”. This reveals…
