2. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Missouri Compromise
U.S. struggles with the question of slavery.
Should it be allowed in all states, some states, or none of the states?
In 1820 there were 11 free states and 11 slave states.
Compromise allowed for 2 new states to enter union.
Missouri = Slave & Maine = Free
Allowed US to keep balance of power.
Banned slavery in territory above the 36°30' north latitude.

3. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Compromise of 1850
California enters Union as Free State
Fugitive Slave Act is adopted.
Made all citizens assist in recovery of runaway slaves.
Slaves had no right to a jury trial.

4. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Kansas-Nebraska Act Senator Stephen A Douglas
Wanted to expand the U.S. boundaries.
Proposed the idea of using popular sovereignty in the Kansas and Nebraska Territories.
Allows people to vote on whether they would be a free or slave state.
This would repeal the Missouri Compromise.

5. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Settling the Territory
After the Kansas-Nebraska Act many settlers moved to Kansas.
Idea of Popular Sovereignty interested many.
For or Against?
Abolitionists- People who wanted slavery to be abolished.
Called free-staters in Kansas.
Set up towns of Topeka & Lawrence
Pro-slavery- People who were for the practice of slavery.
Set up the towns of Atchison & Leavenworth

6. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Dred Scott
He was a slave who sued the government for his freedom.
His master was Dr. John Emerson (Army Surgeon)
When his master died he sued for his freedom because he had lived in free territory with Dr. Emerson.
Supreme Court Ruling
Ruled that African Americans are not citizens.
Unconstitutional for U.S. government to prohibit slavery in territories.
Allowed slavery to start in KS

7. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Bleeding Kansas Lawrence
Beecher Bibles- Rifle used by free-staters to defend against proslavery forces.
Bleeding Kansas
Free-staters vs. Proslavery settlers.
War broke out between the two sides.
Lawrence
Home to many free-staters.
Local newspaper very critical of Proslavery settlers near town.
Proslavery forces were angered and attacked the city.
Led by Sheriff Samuel Jones (Southern Sympathizer)
Lawrence is burned to the ground.
Sheriff Jones- “This is the happiest day of my life, I assure you.”

8. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory John Brown Pottawatomie Creek Massacre
Radical abolitionist who believed violence was the only way to overthrow slavery system.
Believed that “God” told him to end slavery.
Pottawatomie Creek Massacre
Attack on proslavery settlers, led by John Brown.
Brutally killed 5 proslavery men.
Bushwhackers – Missourians who crossed boarder to attack free-staters.
Jayhawkers – Kansans who crossed boarder to attack proslavery settlers.

9. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Election Fraud
1854, Gov. Reeder holds election to pick a delegate for U.S. Congress.
Elect John Whitfield, Proslavery supporter.
Over half of the votes were illegal.
Boarder Ruffians – Missourians who crossed boarder to vote.
2nd election to create a legislature.
Illegal voting again, proslavery.
Called “Bogus Legislature”
Free-staters were angry, created their own legislature.

10. Ch. 4 Kansas Territory Constitution
Before KS can become state, it needs a constitution.
4 constitutions will be created.
Could not agree on terms.
Hard with 2 governments
Wyandotte Constitution
Made KS a free state.
Improvement to women's rights.
Could not be approved until Southern states begin to succeed.
