Dispossession The British dispossessed the Indigenous Australians’ land. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People were pushed back from their fertile lands along the coast, into the deserts. This led to fewer food sources and a loss of land for hunting.
3
Dislocation The dislocation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from the land caused a loss of Aboriginal communities’ cultural identity, as Indigenous culture is strongly connected to the land.
4
Loss of lives Between 1788 and 1900, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s population was reduced by 90%. Three main reasons for this were the introduction of new diseases, loss of land and people dying through conflict with Britain.
5
disease Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had no resistance to British diseases, from the measles to the common cold. Thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people died when these diseases swept through their camps.
6
Loss of Resources European colonisation also meant the introduction of non-native flora and fauna. When introduced, this caused extinction of many native plant and animal species. Many of which were used for food and medicine.
