1 What does a Big Sir need to do?
Big Sir Elect Training By: Don Dill & Derek Southern

2 Alert! There is no simple answer that applies to every SIR branch! We have large branches, small branches, rural branches, Urban branches, branches in retirement communities… All have a range of opportunities to excel, and each branch must find an individual path to success.

3 Only 9 Branches with 3 years of growth
Data refers to membership results

4 37 Branches with 3 years of decline
Data refers to membership results

5 9 Growth + 37 Declining Branches overlaid
Note that Growing and Declining Branches are often found in geographic proximity! So why is there a difference in their membership change? This would indicate that Geographic location is not the key to growth or decline! The data refers to the time period , but the same point can be made in Oct 2016! 3 years of growth means 3 successive years, and 3 years of decline means 3 successive years. 2 growth branches are hidden under declining branches! (Lincoln and Sonora)

6 Can we Transfer Knowledge from the 9 to the 37? And to the rest?
Here is one approach: Determine the branch’s problem(s) Use the SLG and RAMP Work with Area Governor Work as a Team (BEC, Area, Region) Ask for HELP!

7 Big Sir Must Provide Leadership R.L. & I.D the 2015 SLG
(Read, Learn and Inwardly Digest) Read, Learn & Inwardly Digest!! An instruction from many a teacher in England…

8 What is Leadership? Leadership is a process of engagement which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal Note: Goals should be stated as OUTCOMES not processes

9 “Engagement” A member’s engagement is the emotional commitment they have to the organization and its goals An engaged Big SIR & Little SIR recognize the need to use all the tools available to keep their Branch growing: for example:

10 The 4 Drivers of Leadership
Communications Personal and Team Growth & Development Appreciation & Recognition Trust & Confidence

11 So who are the Leaders of SIR?

Understand Forms 27 & Remember you do NOT have to post the data personally Form 27 data provides information to both Branch and State Set up a discussion of both forms at every BEC meeting. Keep Branch members informed of any trends

18 Simple Ideas from SLG Mentor Little Sir; let him officiate at a Branch and BEC meeting Get new members involved soon after joining your branch, eg as greeters, assistant chairs… Directors should have responsibilities! Appoint Membership/Attendance Chairs as Directors so they have a vote at BEC meetings

19 Prepare your Little Sir
He should be ready to take over from you in your absence. How can you assist him to be prepared? Ask him to work with BEC officers to understand their reports (See latest schedule of Branch Operations). Present a Monthly report? Get him familiar with SIR State Manual, the website, Happenings He should meet quarterly with Area Little Sirs

20 Key Branch RAMP Teams (Committees)
Recruitment Activities Member Relations Publicity and Image Nominating Committee When, and Why, are they needed? Can Branches support all these Teams? Ensure Directors are involved

21 BEC and Lunch Meetings You need an agenda to run successful meetings! This ensures you do not forget important items, and it helps you keep to the schedule so you finish on time. Hint: never say “sorry” from the podium
