2 Preliminaries All of the students in the class to stand up.
All students who are under 5’6” tall sit in the front of the room and all those 5’6” and taller sit in the back of the room. Only those in the front of the room may participate, ask questions, and answer questions. The grades for those in the front of the room will always be higher than those in the back. Reflect: is this fair?

3 Objectives: The students will be able to explain with at least 75% accuracy how Nelson Mandela ended apartheid. The students will be able to summarize at least 3 reasons Mandela struggled to end apartheid.

4 Focus Lesson: Nelson Mandela
Literary term: apartheid Class Reading: Long Walk to Freedom (Elements…, pp. 113–114) Small Groups Read the short excerpt (Holt World Literature, pp. 115–118). Find quotations from their assigned pages that provide information about Mandela’s life, work, ideas, and South Africa. Record your quotations on “Open Mind” graphic organizer. Gallery walk.

5 Homework: Code of Mandela
Using the Code of Chivalry as a guide, create a Code of Mandela with at least 5 principles. Due next class (10 homework points)
