1 August 27, 2018- DLR Notes-Sentence Structure
A COMPLEX SENTENCE has one dependent clause (headed by a subordinating conjunction or a relative pronoun ) joined to an independent clause. Examples: Although Tom reads novels, Jack reads comics. Jack reads comics although Tom reads novels. Punctuation patterns (to match A and B): A. Dependent clause, independent clause B. Independent clause dependent clause A COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE has two independent clauses joined to one or more dependent clauses. Example: Although Tom reads novels, and Jack reads comics, they both learn a lot! Punctuation patterns: Follow the rules given for compound and complex sentences. A compound-complex sentence is merely a combination of the two. Subordinate Conjunctions often signal dependent clauses: if, when, because, then, that, who, whoever, while, so, although, after, before, etc.

Practice sentences- Tuesday, August 28, For each sentence, circle the DEPENDENT clauses and underline the INDEPENDENT clauses. Then label each as either COMPLEX or COMPOUND-COMPLEX. Whenever I eat too much, I get a stomachache. If I go to the movies, I always buy popcorn. When I go to the theater, I buy popcorn, and I buy a drink. My stomach always hurts after I go to the movies. I love to go to the movies, and I like to eat a lot because those are my favorite activities.
