1 BELLWORK: 11/1 Why is it hard to estimate casualties in guerrilla wars? How did the conflict in Algeria change once de Gaulle was appointed as the new leader of France? Describe the Evian Accords. Analyze the political effects of the Algerian War. THINKER: “A conventional army loses if it does not win. A guerrilla army wins if it does not lose.” How does this quote relate to FLN tactics? What would it have taken for the FLN to lose?

2 Charles De Gaulle How did the conflict in Algeria change once de Gaulle was appointed as the new leader of France? How did pieds-noirs respond to this?

3 OAS What was the OAS? What were they used for in Algeria?
Were they successful? Why or why not?

4 Barricades Week

5 Events leading to the end of the Algerian War
FLN moved to cities to gain international attention  In response, France increased use of torture; supposed to deter FLN aggression Morocco/Tunisia continued to be FLN supply routes  Morice Line  Battle of Frontiers (ALN attempted to move arms across border = clash with French = high death toll) Failure to control FLN was final straw for French government  French 4th rep fell  De Gaulle comes to power (all sides optimistic…. Why??) FLN expands terror attacks into France  De Gaulle worried about continuation of conflict  Algerian independence left up to a referendum Feeling betrayed, Pied-Noirs set up barricades in streets  De Gaulle enters into negotiations with FLN leadership  OAS created to continue the fight  FLN increased attacks and demonstrations

10 EA 2 Practice In order to practice for EA2 and review the Algerian War, you are going to create an outline for a practice EA2 prompt! What are some things to remember when answering EA2 prompts? Lets review the steps: pages 37-38 Each group will be assigned one prompt to outline (2, 3, 4 or 5) Your outline must include a thesis, minimum of three points, specific examples that will be addressed in each point, and an answer to the question (conclusion). Take this seriously – use this as an opportunity to practice and prepare for your external assessment! Your group will present tomorrow so be prepared!
