1 Photosynthesis The process in which energy from the sun is used to combine Carbon, Oxygen, and Hydrogen atoms to build the sugar glucose (C6H12O6).

2 Photosynthesis Reactants (what goes in): Products (what is made):
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) - Water (H2O) - Sunlight (energy) Products (what is made): - Oxygen (O2) - Glucose (C6H12O6) Plants are “autotrophs” because they produce their own food. Organisms that cannot produce their own food are “heterotrophs.”

3 Where does photosynthesis occur?
- PS occurs in plant leaves. - CO2 enters leaves through pores called stomata, which are surrounded by guard cells. - How does H2O reach the leaves?

4 Chloroplasts: Organelles of photosynthesis
Chloroplasts: organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs.

5 Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll
- Chlorophyll is a pigment in chloroplasts that absorbs energy from sunlight. - Plants are green because chlorophyll reflects green light. Talk to your neighbor: Why are leaves green? Your answer should include “chlorophyll” and refer to the graph on the right.

6 Chloroplasts: Organelles of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis has two parts: The Light Reactions in the thylakoid. Energy from sunlight is captured and used to make ATP. Water is split into oxygen and hydrogen atoms. Oxygen gas is released. The Calvin Cycle in the stroma uses energy from ATP to power the synthesis of glucose. The carbon atoms in glucose come from CO2.

7 What is ATP? Adenosine Triphosphate: ATP is a packet of energy that the cell can release when it needs energy. When do cells need energy?

8 Photosynthesis Activities
Objectives: Vocabulary: Autotroph, Heterotroph, Photosynthesis, ATP Create a foldable study guide to help you remember the details of photosynthesis. You will have a quiz on Friday. Complete the photosynthesis packet to review what you learned about photosynthesis today. This will also let you practice interpreting graphs and scientific diagrams.
