1 Energy and Photosynthesis

2 Photosynthesis notes outline
Cells need energy for: ATP vs. ADP 3 differences how energy released III. Autotroph Photo. Equation A. Chloroplast B. chlorphyll 2 steps of Photo. 1. light dependent: occurs where? reactants/product 2. light independent: VI. Factors affecting photosynthesis

3 All living organisms—require energy for survival

4 Plants trap light energy convert it into food

5 Animals and other organisms
Can not trap sunlight directly for food Eat green plants for food

6 Cell use energy for – Active Transport Cell Division
Flagella & Cilia Movement Making Proteins Maintain homeostasis Build organelles

7 2 types of cellular energy
ATP—Adenosine Triphosphate 3 phosphates High energy Stored energy in cells

8 2 types of cellular energy
ADP- Adenosine Diphosphate 2 phosphates Lower energy Released energy

9 Energy Produced—When? Released from ATP molecule when 1 phosphate is removed Makes ADP

10 Autotroph--an organism that can make its own food using energy from sun

11 Photosynthesis--when an autotroph uses carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and sunlight to make glucose sugar (C6H12O6), with oxygen (O2) as a byproduct.

12 Let’s try to write the equation:

13 Products Reactants Photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 Products Reactants

14 Chloroplast--Cell organelle where photosynthesis takes place

15 Chlorophyll--Most common pigment in chloroplasts,
makes the plant green because it reflects green light (absorbs all other colors

16 Section 9.2 Summary – pages 225-230
Pigments absorb light energy specific wavelengths chlorophyll – most common pigment (there are several others) absorbs most wavelengths of light except green carotenoids – pigment causing yellow and orange leaves, veggies and flowers Section 9.2 Summary – pages

17 Photosynthesis has 2 stages—
1. light-dependent reactions 2. light independent (Calvin cycle)

18 Light dependent reactions
Requires light to make ATP ATP energy is stored for light independent reactions Water is split (photolysis) Releases oxygen

19 Light reactions Occur in grana (thylakoid) of chloroplast
Reactants: light, water ADP Products: oxygen, ATP

20 Light independent reactions (Calvin cycle)
Uses energy created in light dependent reactions Uses carbon dioxide Forms glucose (sugar)

21 Calvin cycle Occurs in stroma Reactants: carbon dioxide, ATP
Products: glucose

22 Draw and label the chloroplast:
(Calvin cycle) (Light reactions)

23 Summary Light reactions Calvin cycle Water + light carbon dioxide = =
= = oxygen glucose

24 Factors affecting Photosynthesis
Amount of water Temperature Intensity of light
